Islam stands for change. Itseeks to change the individual and society. This change covers every aspect of human life, from personal morality to business, economics, and politics. It’s only natural that Islam should be fought by those who oppose change. This is way it has been throughout history. It happened to Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be on them). It will happen to anyone who wants to stand up and proclaim the true message of Islam to the world today. Sayyid Qutb took that task and was persecuted by corrupt and secularist leadership in Egypt and eventually hanged – The ultimate price for working to please Allah and to propagate Prophet’s Sunnah.
Sayyid Qutb‘s 42nd martyrdom anniversary on August 29 – would pass without public notice, as usual, with the exception of members of Islamic movement around the world. Sayyid Qutb was an Islamic Reformer, though projected as “a revolutionary” by the western political and intellectual elites due to his call for Muslims to explore the true message of Islam – to liberate themselve from “Jehaliya (Paganism)” and western cultural and political colonization.
In 1965, Sayyid Qutb – author of 24 books – published his famous book, “Mallem Fittareek (Milestones)” – for which he was arrested on allegations that he was conspiring to overthrow Gamal Nasser’s Arab nationalist regime. Tried by a kangaroo military court and sentenced to death. Against widespread local and internation uproar, the Nasserites hanged Sayyid Qutb on August 29, 1966 to the great pleasure of their western masters.
Sayyid Qutb’s other book, Hadha \’d-Din, is also worth studing.
Iranian Postal Department issued a commemorative stamp in 1968 in honour of Sayyid Qutb’s martyrdom. Dr. Ali Shari’ati translated some of Sayyid Qutb’s writings, which were used pre-Islamic Revolution period – for which Dr. Shari’ati earned the nickname “Shia Qutb”.
